Equities market closed on a positive note, as NGXASI appreciated by 1.05% to close at 43,476.75 basis points as against +0.73% appreciation recorded previously. Its Year-to-Date (YTD) returns currently stands at +1.78%.
Market breadth closed positive as AIRTELAFRI led 22 Gainers as against 17 Losers topped by UNITYBNK at the end of today’s session – an improved performance when compared with previous outlook.
Market turnover closed positive as volume moved up by +472.75% as against -51.81% downtick recorded in the previous session. WEMABANK, TRANSCORP and UBA were the most active to boost market turnover. ZENITHBANK and AIRTELAFRI topped market value list.

At the end of today’s trading session on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NGX), a total of 1,240,862,457 shares in 4,032 deals, corresponding to a market value of NGN 42,966,433,022.69, were traded. Compared with the previous NGX trading day (Tuesday, January 4), today’s data shows 473% improvement in volume but 1% decline in deals. The current market capitalization of the Nigerian Stock Exchange is NGN 22.6 trillion.
In the aggregate, 111 NGX equities participated in trading, ending with 22 gainers and 17 losers. Airtel Africa led the gainers with 10% share price appreciation closing at NGN 1,050.50 per share, followed by BUA Foods (+10%), Oando (+9.73%) and Aiico Insurance (+8.33%).
On the losing side, Unity Bank came out last with an end-of-day price depreciation of 9.62% at NGN 0.47 per share, followed by Royal Exchange (-9.41%), Regency Alliance Insurance Co. (-8.16%) and Union Bank Nigeria (-6.9%). BUA Foods recorded the highest volume of 1.01 billion traded shares, followed by Wema Bank (25m), Transnational Corp. of Nigeria (25m) and Nigerian Exchange Group (14.5m).
Regarding the performance of NGX market indices, the benchmark NGX All-Share Index (ASI) increased by 429.97 (1.05%) points to close at 43,476.75, representing a 1-week gain of 2.87%, a 4-week gain of 3.1%, and an overall year-to-date gain of 1.78%. Other remarkable indices that performed were the NGX Premium Index (-0.88%; +2.14% 1WK; -0.95% YTD), NGX Top 50 Index (-1.01%; +1.01% 1WK; -0.75% YTD), NGX Top 30 Index (-1.03%; +1.38% 1WK; +0.11% YTD), NGX Oil & Gas Index (+3.12%; +1.49% 1WK; +2.6% YTD), NGX Insurance Index (+0.9%; +2.3% 1WK; +0.41% YTD), and NGX ASeM Index (+0%).
