NGX: Equities Market begins the week a bearish note as ASI declines by 1.96%.
Trading activities in the Nigeria Equities Market closed negative on Tuesday as the NGX-ASI decreased by 1.96% to close at 51,952.99 compared to 52,994.13 recorded at the close of the previous trading day; indicating a YTD return of +1.37%.
Similarly, the market capitalization decreased by N569.12 billion to N28.30 trillion from N28.87 trillion recorded at the previous trading day’s close, while the market turnover increased to N4.79 billion from N1.93 billion
At the end of today’s trading session , a total of 1,723,440,493 shares in 4,286 deals, corresponding to a market value of NGN 4,789,822,504.85, were traded.
Compared with the previous NGX trading day (Thursday, April 6), today’s data shows 546% improvement in volume, 148% improvement in turnover, and 17% improvement in deals. The current market capitalization of the Nigerian Stock Exchange is NGN 28.3 trillion.
In the aggregate, 107 NGX listed equities participated in trading, ending with four gainers and 28 losers. Caverton Offshore Support Group led the gainers with 8.25% share price appreciation closing at NGN 1.05 per share, followed by Nigerian Aviation Handling Co. (+3.06%), Transcorp Nigeria (+2.19%) and Sterling Bank (+1.35%).
On the losing side, Lafarge Wapco came out last with an end-of-day price depreciation of 10.85% at NGN 23.00 per share, followed by Airtel Africa (-10%), Consolidated Hallmark Insurance (-9.09%) and Royal Exchange (-9.09%). Transcorp Nigeria recorded the highest volume of 1.55 billion traded shares, followed by Zenith Bank (44.5m), United Bank for Africa (21m) and Fidelity Bank (8.39m).
Regarding the performance of NGX market indices, the benchmark NGX All-Share Index (ASI) declined 1,041.14 (-1.96%) points to close at 51,952.99, representing a 1-week loss of 4.2%, a 4-week loss of 6.89%, but an overall year-to-date gain of 1.37%.
Other remarkable indices that performed were the NGX Top 50 Index (-0.1%; -1.07% 1WK; +3.88% YTD), NGX Top 30 Index (-1.79%; -3.96% 1WK; +0.77% YTD), NGX Oil & Gas Index (+0%; -0.11% 1WK; +10.33% YTD), NGX Consumer Goods Index (-0.16%; -0.78% 1WK; +18.4% YTD), NGX Premium Index (-0.16%; -0.24% 1WK; +11.71% YTD), and NGX Banking Index (-0.34%; -1.38% 1WK; +6.99% YTD).
