NGX: Equities Market closes negative with capitalization down N25bn as ASI declines by 0.09%
The Nigerian Equities Market closed Tuesday with a loss of N25 billion in market capitalization, as bears regained their grip on the local bourse.
The All Share Index (ASI) decreased by 0.09% to close at 48,853.54 points. In the same vein, market capitalization depreciated by N25 billion.
As of the close of the market on Tuesday, the stock market value stood at N26.6 trillion. Year-to-date, the stock market has advanced by 6137.1 basis points or 12.56%.
At the end of today’s trading session, a total of 162,977,718 shares in 3,286 deals, corresponding to a market value of NGN 3,874,699,947.74, were traded.
Compared with the previous NGX trading day (Monday, December 12), today’s data shows 31% decline in volume, 54% improvement in turnover, but 1% decline in deals. The current market capitalization of the Nigerian Stock Exchange is NGN 26.6 trillion.
In the aggregate, 104 NGX listed equities participated in trading, ending with 13 gainers and 16 losers. Smart Products Nigeria led the gainers with 10% share price appreciation closing at NGN 0.22 per share, followed by Cornerstone Insurance Company (+8.7%), BUA Cement (+3.6%) and FTN Cocoa Processors (+3.23%).
On the losing side, SCOA Nigeria came out last with an end-of-day price depreciation of 9.3% at NGN 0.78 per share, followed by Chams (-8.7%), Jaiz Bank (-8.42%) and Lasaco Assurance (-6.67%). Sterling Bank recorded the highest volume of 31.6 million traded shares, followed by Guaranty Trust Holding (19.2m), Chams (16.4m) and Zenith Bank (14.2m).
Regarding the performance of NGX market indices, the benchmark NGX All-Share Index (ASI) pared 45.54 (-0.09%) points to close at 48,853.54, representing a 1-week gain of 1.01%, a 4-week gain of 11.52%, and an overall year-to-date gain of 14.37%.
Other remarkable indices that performed were the NGX Top 50 Index (+0.2%; +1.23% 1WK; -3.41% YTD), NGX Top 30 Index (-0.12%; +1.04% 1WK; +2.56% YTD), NGX Industrial Index (+1.78%; +7.41% 1WK; +17.59% YTD), NGX Main Board Index (+0.65%; +3.17% 1WK; +24.32% YTD), NGX Banking Index (+0.64%; +2.14% 1WK; +0.35% YTD), and NGX Insurance Index (+0.31%; -0.22% 1WK; -16.01% YTD).
