NGX : Investors lose N595.05bn WoW as ASI dips by -2.63% to close the week negative
Equities market closed on a negative note, as NGXASI depreciated by -0.19% to close at 42,167.91 basis points as against -0.51% depreciation recorded previously. Its Year-to-Date (YTD) returns currently stands at +4.71%.
In short, the market extended losses recorded since the start of the week, as investors sold off MTN NIGERIA COMMUNICATIONS PLC shares which fell 1.1%, GUARANTY TRUST HOLDING COMPANY PLC shares which declined 0.4% and ZENITH BANK PLC shares which fell 1.9%.
The performance of NGX market indices show the benchmark NGX All-Share Index (ASI) pared 80.07 (-0.19%) points to close at 42,167.91, representing a 1-week loss of 2.63%, a 4-week gain of 0.37%, and an overall year-to-date gain of 4.71%.
Other remarkable indices that performed were the NGX Top 50 Index (-0.28%; -1.16% 1WK; +3.05% YTD), NGX Top 30 Index (-0.38%; -3.25% 1WK; +3.13% YTD), NGX Premium Index (-0.53%; -4.84% 1WK; +17.19% YTD), NGX Insurance Index (+2%; +2.97% 1WK; -0.52% YTD), NGX Industrial Index (+0.02%; -0.08% 1WK; +6.81% YTD), and NGX Oil & Gas Index (+0%; -4.55% 1WK; +53.95% YTD).
At the end of the last weekday of trading on the NGX, a total of 180,953,348 shares in 4,019 deals, corresponding to a market value of NGN 2,425,189,490.93, were traded. Compared with the previous NGX trading day (Thursday, December 2), today’s data shows 44% decline in volume, 54% decline in turnover, and 15% decline in deals. The current market capitalization of the Nigerian Stock Exchange is NGN 22 trillion.
In the aggregate, 106 NGX equities participated in trading, ending with 13 gainers and 18 losers. UPDC led the gainers with 10% share price appreciation closing at NGN 0.99 per share, followed by Linkage Assurance (+9.8%), N.E.M. Insurance Company (+9.76%) and Prestige Assurance Company (+8.51%). On the losing side, FTN Cocoa Processors came out last with an end-of-day price depreciation of 7.89% at NGN 0.35 per share, followed by Consolidated Hallmark Insurance (-6.38%), Champion Breweries (-5.88%) and Courteville Business Solutions (-5.13%). Guaranty Trust Holding recorded the highest volume of 24 million traded shares, followed by Mutual Benefits Assurance (20.2m), Access Bank (18.7m) and Ecobank Transnational (9.44m).
Analysing by sectors, the Oil and Gas index fell 3.5%, Insurance index fell 2.2%, Banking index fell 1.2% and Industrial Goods index fell 0.1%, while the Consumer Goods index upped 0.1% to become the sole gainer of the day.
