NGX: Investors record N20.38bn loss as ASI dips by 0.09%
Equities market closed on a negative note, as NGXASI depreciated by -0.09% to close at 43,859.30 basis points as against +0.10% % appreciation recorded previously. Its Year-to-Date (YTD) returns currently stands at +2.68%.
Market breadth closed negative as BUAFoods led 17 gainers as against 26 losers topped by MBENEFIT at the end of today’s session – an unimproved performance when compared with previous outlook.
Market turnover closed negative as volume down by -5.37% as against -21.23% downtick recorded in the previous session. Transcorp, FBNH and Guaranty Trust Holding were the most active to boost market turnover. Seplat and Stanbic topped market value list.
At the end of today’s trading session on the NGX, a total of 294,539,104 shares in 4,501 deals, corresponding to a market value of NGN 6,768,334,554.15, were traded. Compared with the previous NGX trading day (Monday, January 10), today’s data shows 5% decline in volume, 22% decline in turnover, and 13% decline in deals. The current market capitalization of the Nigerian Stock Exchange is NGN 23.6 trillion.
In the aggregate, 103 NGX equities participated in trading, ending with 17 gainers and 26 losers. BUA Foods led the gainers with 10% share price appreciation closing at NGN 64.35 per share, followed by Eterna (+5.09%), Union Bank Nigeria (+4.63%) and Wema Bank (+3.57%). On the losing side, Mutual Benefits Assurance came out last with an end-of-day price depreciation of 10% at NGN 0.27 per share, followed by Berger Paints (-9.94%), UPDC Real Estate Investment Trust (-8.14%) and Nestle Nigeria (-7.81%). Transcorp Nigeria recorded the highest volume of 58.4 million traded shares, followed by BUA Foods (51.5m), FBN Holdings (16.5m) and Guaranty Trust Holding (14.1m).
Regarding the performance of NGX market indices, the benchmark NGX All-Share Index (ASI) pared 37.83 (-0.09%) points to close at 43,859.30, representing a 1-week gain of 1.89%, a 4-week gain of 5.22%, and an overall year-to-date gain of 2.68%. Other remarkable indices that performed were the NGX Premium Index (-0.11%; -0.94% 1WK; -1% YTD), NGX Top 30 Index (-0.73%; -2.06% 1WK; -0.94% YTD), NGX Top 50 Index (-1.42%; -1.2% 1WK; -0.94% YTD), NGX Oil & Gas Index (+0.95%; +3.57% 1WK; +3.05% YTD), NGX Banking Index (+0.16%; +0.61% 1WK; +0.82% YTD), and NGX ASeM Index (+0%).
