NGX: Investors record N29.65bn loss as ASI declines by 0.12%
Equities market closed on a negative note, as NGXASI depreciated by -0.12% to close at 44,399.66 basis points as against -0.34% depreciation recorded previously. Its Year-to-Date (YTD) returns currently stands at +3.94%.
Market breadth closed negative as EQUITYASUR led 16 Gainers as against 22 Losers topped by UNITYKAP at the end of today’s session – an unimproved performance when compared with previous outlook.
Market turnover closed negative as volume down by -47.18% as against +26.10% uptick recorded in the previous session. TRANSCORP, FBNH and GUARANTY were the most active to boost market turnover. GUARANTY and ZENITHBANK topped market value list.

At the end of the first weekday of trading on the NGX today, a total of 214,315,212 shares in 4,410 deals, corresponding to a market value of NGN 2,688,643,899.38, were traded. Compared with the previous NGX trading day (Friday, January 14), today’s data shows 47% decline in volume, 73% decline in turnover, but 14% improvement in deals. The current market capitalization of the Nigerian Stock Exchange is NGN 23.9 trillion.
In the aggregate, 104 NGX equities participated in trading, ending with 16 gainers and 22 losers. The Initiates led the gainers with 10% share price appreciation closing at NGN 0.44 per share, followed by Sunu Assurances Nigeria (+9.68%), Eterna (+6.95%) and Wapic Insurance (+6.25%). On the losing side, Veritas Kapital Assurance came out last with an end-of-day price depreciation of 8.7% at NGN 0.21 per share, followed by Mutual Benefits Assurance (-7.41%), Cornerstone Insurance Company (-7.27%) and BUA Foods (-6.36%). Transcorp Nigeria recorded the highest volume of 39.3 million traded shares, followed by FBN Holdings (25.5m), Guaranty Trust Holding (24.8m) and Zenith Bank (20.9m).
Regarding the performance of NGX market indices, the benchmark NGX All-Share Index (ASI) pared 55.01 (-0.12%) points to close at 44,399.66, representing a 1-week gain of 1.14%, a 4-week gain of 4.82%, and an overall year-to-date gain of 3.94%. Other remarkable indices that performed were the NGX Top 30 Index (+0.19%; +1.15% 1WK; +0.94% YTD), NGX Top 50 Index (+0.13%; -0.17% 1WK; +0.31% YTD), NGX Premium Index (-0.06%; +2.49% 1WK; +1.57% YTD), NGX Industrial Index (+0.81%; +2.65% 1WK; +4.76% YTD), NGX Lotus Islamic Index (+0.26%; -0.16% 1WK; -1.21% YTD), and NGX Oil & Gas Index (+0.21%; +2.55% 1WK; +4.69% YTD).
