NGX: Investors record N417.56bn loss as ASI depreciates by 1.48%
Trading activities in the Nigeria Equities Market closed negative today Monday as the NGX-ASI decreased by 1.48% to close at 51,127.38 compared to 51,893.94 recorded at the close of the previous trading day; indicating a YTD return of -0.24%.
Similarly, the market capitalization decreased by N417.6 billion to N27.8503 trillion from N28.2679 trillion recorded at the previous trading day’s close, while the market turnover decreased to N1.57 billion from N2.36 billion.
At the end of the first weekday, a total of 226,593,959 shares in 4,373 deals, corresponding to a market value of NGN 1,567,996,424.23, were traded. Compared with the previous NGX trading day (Friday, April 14), today’s data shows 13% decline in volume, 32% decline in turnover, but 16% improvement in deals. The current market capitalization of the Nigerian Stock Exchange is NGN 27.9 trillion.
In the aggregate, 104 NGX listed equities participated in trading, ending with 15 gainers and 20 losers. Ikeja Hotel led the gainers with 9.48% share price appreciation closing at NGN 1.27 per share, followed by Transcorp Nigeria (+9.47%), Consolidated Hallmark Insurance (+8.77%) and Nigerian Exchange Group (+8.16%). On the losing side, Africa Prudential came out last with an end-of-day price depreciation of 13.33% at NGN 5.20 per share, followed by Zenith Bank (-12%), United Bank for Africa (-7.06%) and International Energy Insurance (-6.98%). Transcorp Nigeria recorded the highest volume of 63.4 million traded shares, followed by Fidelity Bank (41.3m), Sterling Bank (22.8m) and Zenith Bank (13.4m).
Regarding the performance of NGX market indices, the benchmark NGX All-Share Index (ASI) declined 782.67 (-1.48%) points to close at 51,127.38, representing a 1-week loss of 3.53%, a 4-week loss of 6.91%, and an overall year-to-date loss of 0.25%. Other remarkable indices that performed were the NGX Top 50 Index (-1.04%; -2.05% 1WK; +1.86% YTD), NGX Top 30 Index (-1.48%; -3.09% 1WK; -0.56% YTD), NGX Main Board Index (+0.11%; -3.04% 1WK; -2.33% YTD), NGX Consumer Goods Index (+0.07%; +0.12% 1WK; +18.73% YTD), NGX Oil & Gas Index (+0%; +10.33% YTD), and NGX Industrial Index (-0%; -0.41% 1WK; +1.75% YTD).
