NGX; Investors record N429.77bn loss as ASI declines by 1.53%
Equities Market closed negative as the key market indicator declined by 789.04 bps amid positive market breadth
The NGX All-Share Index declined by -1.53% to close at 50868.52 basis points as against a 0.12% gain recorded previously to close at 51,657.56 basis points at the end of the last trading session. In Naira terms, the NGX Market CAP records a N429.77bn loss.
At the end of today’s trading session on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NGX), a total of 138,716,449 shares in 3,673 deals, corresponding to a market value of NGN 1,828,177,123.80, were traded.
Compared with the previous NGX trading day (Wednesday, January 4), today’s data shows 48% decline in volume, 86% decline in turnover, and 12% decline in deals. The current market capitalization of the Nigerian Stock Exchange is NGN 27.7 trillion.
In the aggregate, 111 NGX listed equities participated in trading, ending with 20 gainers and 16 losers. John Holt led the gainers with 10% share price appreciation closing at NGN 0.88 per share, followed by Honeywell Flour Mill (+9.95%), Computer Warehouse Group (+9.78%) and UAC of Nigeria (+4.88%).
On the losing side, Prestige Assurance Company came out last with an end-of-day price depreciation of 8.7% at NGN 0.42 per share, followed by Airtel Africa (-8.26%), University Press (-7.37%) and NPF Microfinance Bank (-7.1%). Sterling Bank recorded the highest volume of 29.2 million traded shares, followed by Guaranty Trust Holding (19.9m), Access Holdings (11.3m) and FBN Holdings (11m).
Regarding the performance of NGX market indices, the benchmark NGX All-Share Index (ASI) declined 789.04 (-1.53%) points to close at 50,868.52, representing a 1-week gain of 1.87%, a 4-week gain of 5.38%, but an overall year-to-date loss of 0.75%.
Other remarkable indices that performed were the NGX Top 50 Index (+0.62%; +2.78% 1WK; +1.76% YTD), NGX Top 30 Index (-1.31%; +1.61% 1WK; -0.55% YTD), NGX Consumer Goods Index (+1.33%; +11.18% 1WK; +7.17% YTD), NGX Banking Index (+0.88%; +1.33% 1WK; +4.03% YTD), NGX Premium Index (+0.11%; +0.28% 1WK; +0.38% YTD), and NGX Oil & Gas Index (+0.09%; +2.46% 1WK; +0.07% YTD).
