Nigeria claims third gold at Tokyo 2020 Paralympics
One day after claiming a second gold medal at the on-going Tokyo Paralympics, in Japan, another Nigerian powerlifter, Folashade Oluwafemiayo has added a third gold to Team Nigeria’s haul of medals, as she won in the Women’s 86kg Final completed, Monday.
Oluwafemiayo beat China’s Zheng Feifei who settled for silver, and Louise Sugden of Great Britain who claimed bronze in that category.
The 36-year-old Oluwafemiayo won the event with a bang by setting a new world record and a Paralympic record with a lift of 152kg.
The silver medalist in the women’s 75kg event at the 2012 Games lifted 147kg in her first attempt and 149kg in the second attempt.
She went on to take the lead with a 151kg lift in her third attempt, leaving her opponents bewildered as she went on to lift 152kg in the final attempt.
More medals came in the Women’s +86kg powerlifting event where China’s X.M. Deng won gold, ahead of Nigeria’s Loveline Obiji who won silver, and M. Zięba of Poland who settled for bronze.
China currently tops the medals table with 54 gold, 35 silver, 30 bronze, totaling 119 medals; Great Britain follows with 26 gold, 20 silver, 22 bronze, summing up 68 medals, Nigeria is in third with 3 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze making up 6 medals
On Sunday, Team Nigeria have clinched their second gold medal at the on-going Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, as powerlifter, Bose Omolayo set a new games record.
Omolayo, competing in the women’s -79kg lifted 141kg claimed the gold medal in the event.
Last Thursday, Latifat Tijani won the country’s first gold at the championship by defeating the event’s favorite, China’s Zhe Cui with a lift of 107kg in the 45kg women’s powerlifting event.
The Nigerian athlete at the ongoing Tokyo Paralympic Games, Tijani won the country’s first gold medal.
Latifat Tijani, also a gold medalist at the Brazzaville 2015 Africa Games and silver medalist at the Rio 2016 Paralympics, took part in the women’s 45kg powerlifting on Thursday, and finished tops.
China’s Zhe Cui lifted 102kg to claim silver.
The bronze was won by Poland’s Justyna Kozdryk who lifted 101kg.
