Nigeria’s equities market losses N58.30bn as NGX-ASI declines by 0.20%
Trading activities in the Equities Market closed negative on Tuesday as the NGX-ASI decreased by 0.02% to close at 52,296.48 compared to 52,403.51 recorded at the close of the previous trading day; indicating a YTD return of +2.04%.
Similarly, the market capitalization decreased by N58.30 billion to N28.4756 trillion from N28.5339 trillion recorded at the previous trading day’s close, while the market turnover decreased to N5.15 billion from N13.07 billion recorded at the close of the previous trading day.
At the end of today’s trading session, a total of 418,396,400 shares in 6,249 deals, corresponding to a market value of NGN 4,738,972,135.61, were traded. Compared with the previous NGX trading day (Friday, April 28), today’s data shows 11% decline in volume but 12% improvement in deals. The current market capitalization of the Nigerian Stock Exchange is NGN 28.5 trillion.
In the aggregate, 108 NGX listed equities participated in trading, ending with 28 gainers and 25 losers. Union Bank Nigeria led the gainers with 10% share price appreciation closing at NGN 7.70 per share, followed by Conoil (+10%), Multiverse Mining & Exploration (+9.71%) and Nigerian Aviation Handling Co. (+9.62%).
On the losing side, Geregu Power came out last with an end-of-day price depreciation of 10% at NGN 290.70 per share, followed by Transcorp Nigeria (-9.96%), Africa Prudential (-9.4%) and International Breweries (-8.51%). Access Holdings recorded the highest volume of 150 million traded shares, followed by AXA Mansard Insurance (41.9m), Wapic Insurance (29.1m) and Fidelity Bank (20.1m).
Regarding the performance of NGX market indices, the benchmark NGX All-Share Index (ASI) pared 107.03 (-0.2%) points to close at 52,296.48, representing a 1-week gain of 1.83%, a 4-week loss of 1.56%, but an overall year-to-date gain of 2.04%.
Other remarkable indices that performed were the NGX Top 30 Index (-0.25%; +2.01% 1WK; +2.36% YTD), NGX Top 50 Index (-0.76%; -0.01% 1WK; +3.15% YTD), NGX Banking Index (+2.84%; +4.59% 1WK; +7.91% YTD), NGX Pension Index (+1.1%; +2.33% 1WK; +6.66% YTD), NGX Oil & Gas Index (+1.05%; +0.91% 1WK; +9.74% YTD), and NGX Premium Index (+0.5%; +1.62% 1WK; +10.78% YTD).
