Nigeria’s population is set to jump to about 377 million people by 2050, according to global population predictions by the United Nations.

The estimates show the Africa’s most populous country would now be sparring numbers with the United States as world’s third most populous nation after China and India, pushing behind Pakistan and Indonesia.

The projected population figure for Nigeria also casts the grim picture of the world’s highest population density, a factor for possible clashes among the heterogeneous ethnic groups in the country.

UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, declared in his blog post in the week that current global population stands at about 8.0 billion people, pointing out the dynamics in global population changes.

The Oracle Today reports that the world’s population topped 8 billion people for the first time in the past 12 months with India emerging global champion and China following.

According to the UN estimates, China, Japan, Germany, and even the US currently face the risk of possible population decline by 2100. The projection entails that some of the industrialized nations of the West will cope with aging and shrinking populace.

The UN stated that Nigeria’s population is not expected to slow down, just like the cumulative population of the African continent.

According to the UN estimates, five of the eight countries that are expected to make up half of the world’s population growth over the next 27 years are in Africa where 70% of the population is under 30.
