Obi supporters defy heavy rains to rally in Port Harcourt, as Tinubu march holds in Lagos (+Video)
One week after marching through the streets of Owerri, the Imo State capital, Nigerians in their thousands defied the heavy downpour as they took over Port Harcourt, in Rivers State, to stage the P/H City leg of the One-Million Man March in support of the Labour Party (LP) Presidential candidate in the 2023 General Elections, Dr Peter Obi.
This is also in Lagos, thousands of supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Saturday, also marched through parts of Ikeja, including Allen Avenue, in the state in support of the ambitions of the ruling party’s standard bearer.
It would be recalled that last Saturday, in Imo, the supporters, mostly the youth, marched through the streets of Owerri, for the One Million Man March in support of the former Anambra State Governor.
The march held while Obi was in Delta State meeting with the Olu of Warri, HRH Ogiame Atuwatse III, same Saturday.
Supporters of Obi and his Vice Presidential candidate, Dr Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed have dominated headlines recently for their One Million Man March initiative across the country.
The current phase of the march has seen it hold in Owerri, Port Harcourt. Calabar, the Cross river tate capital is expected to be the next stop of the march.
The heavy rains did not deter the marchers as they walked through the streets of Port Harcourt of the LP candidate, Obi, who incidentally is in Germany attending a function.
Same as last Saturday’s rally in Owerri, Obi was instead in Delta State at the palace of the Olu of Warri when the march held.
The Port Harcourt marched from the popular Oil Mill Market to the Isaac Boro Park in the Rivers State capital in support of Obi.
Some of the youths said the exercise was to show that “Peter Obi has the required structure” to win the presidential election next year.
Popular faces who participated at the Port Harcourt march included Nollywood veteran actress, Hilda Dokubo.
Meanwhile, in Benue, supporters of Obi, also at the weekend grounded commercial and business activities in Makurdi , the state capital as they staged the One-Million-Man- March tagged; ‘Obitrek, We Are the Structure’.
The self sponsored march had people from all walks of life including women, youths and the elderly in attendance.
The march which commenced from the popular IBB Square saw the participants driving and walking through major streets in the town bearing placards and singing solidarity songs in support of the presidential candidate and his vice.
Some of the placards read “we are the structure,” “it is time to take back our country,” “we no dey give shishi,” “it is time to rescue Nigeria,” Nigeria will be great again, the future is now,”
Speaking at the rally ground, State Publicity Secretary of Labour Party, Mr. Kengkeng Ati explained that “Obitrek is an activity of coalition of Peter Obi support groups in Benue state.
“They are people who have identified our presidential candidate and a few other candidates across the state and decided to do a solidarity march for them.
“These are people who came together, raised money on their own and undertook the activity without the prompting of the party.
“So what they did was not an activity of our party. No member of the Labour Party leadership or candidate in the coming elections was part of the programme because we are aware of the INEC time table and we cannot go against it. It was a self funded activity of like minds.
“They tagged it One-Million-Man-March, We Are the Structure. They came out to show that they are the structure of the party.
“They came to tell us that they represent the voters, colleagues and associates across board and they will rally them to vote for Obi when the time comes.
“Apart from that, they also did a fantastic job from what I gathered, they did advocacy and voter education which is an important assignment for everyone.”
In Enugu, also as the weekend, supporters of Labour Party Presidential candidate, Peter Obi Saturday shut down the capital city, as they marched through major roads.
The march was a prelude to a conference held to promote the candidacy of the former Anambra State Governor.
The conference which is tagged; ‘Charity Begins At Home,’ was held at the Kobb Event Centre later on Saturday.
It was the first major show of support by the Obidient group in Enugu, the headquarters of the South East.
The conference was put together by the Captain Everest Nnaji-led Enugu Peter Obi Support Group to join other parts of Nigeria where youths have spoken for a change in the administration of the country.
