One officer killed as police, Okada riders clash in Lagos
One policeman lost his life during a clash involving commercial motorcycle operators with security operatives from the Iponri Divisional Police Station in Lagos, Friday.
The police officer reportedly died from injuries sustained in the clash with Okada riders resisting the restriction order placed by the Lagos Government on their operations in the Ijora Badiya area of the state.
The Okada riders and other hoodlums were said to be armed with dangerous weapons including machetes and clubs and charms during the violent confrontation with police operative enforcing the no-operation order by the state government.
According to police report, the officers had arrived the scene to enforce the restriction order on Okada riders by the Lagos Government when they were attacked by the hoodlums who were armed with dangerous weapons, such as cutlasses, clubs, and charms.
The hoodlums also tried to burn the operational van of the policemen but they were prevented by the timely arrival of a response team of Rapid Response Squad (RRS) and other operatives from the divisions deployed to the scene to prevent further breakdown of law and order at the area.
Confirming the incident, the Lagos Police Command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO) SP Benjamin Hundeyin said two officers were seriously injured in the attack, as one of the affected officers later died.
“The policemen went to the area to implement the Okada restriction order by the Lagos State government when the policemen were attacked
“Some of the riders have been arrested and normalcy have been restored at the scene,” Hundeyin reported.
