Onyekwere wins gold, Amaechi bronze in discus throw, as Team Nigeria move to 8 medals
Team Nigeria’s Chioma Onyekwere, Tuesday, won a third gold medal for the country in the discus event, taking the total tally to 8 medals at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.
All previous medals won by Team Nigeria had come from various categories in the female weightlifting event, where the country won six medals, including the latest on Tuesday by Mary Osijo who claimed a bronze medal in the 87kg category.
Nigeria won two gold, one silver and two bronze medals, before Tuesday’s round of competition which finished with another bronze by Osijo, all in weightlifting.
Onyekwere won Team Nigeria’s third gold medal in the discus after throwing an SB of 61.70m, to beat England’s Jade Lally who won the silver medal throwing 58.42m.
In the same event, another Nigerian, Obiageri Amaechi finished third in the final, clinching the bronze medal after throwing 56.99m.
Earlier, Tuesday, in the women’s weightlifting, Mary Osijo won a bronze medal in the 87kg category.
She lifted 102kg in the snatch and 123 in the Clean & Jerk for a combined total weight of 225kg to increase the nation’s medal tally in Birmingham.
