Over 1, 200 Law teachers from Law Faculties of Universities across the country and other agencies purely dedicated to law, would converged on Umuahia, Abia State capital, for the 54th Annual Conference of the Nigeria Association of Law Teachers (NALT).
President of NALTs, Prof. Ezenwa Ngwakwe, who made this known while briefing newsmen in Umuahia, said that Abia State University which has its Law Faculty in the Umuahia Campus of the institution would be hosting the week-long event slated for between July 11- 15, 2023.
Prof. Ngwakwe who is also the Dean, Faculty of Law of Abia State University, said the Conference with the theme: “Law and National Integration,” is expected to x-ray, among others, the contentious issues of restructuring and federalism.
Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, would declare the Conference open on July 12, 2023, at the International Conference Centre (ICC), Umuahia which would be followed by Plenary and Breakout Sessions, Ngwakwe said.
Keynote Address of the Conference, according to the NALT President, would be given by the President of Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Yakubu Maikyau (SAN), while Prof. Ernest Ojukwu and Dr. Mike Ozekhome, would present the Lead Papers.
“It is expected that Papers to be presented will help to look at the problems of Nigerian integration, including restructuring, federalism and things that actually weld us together and the forces that are trying to disunite us, especially as they are affected by the laws,” Prof Ngwakwe explained.
“So, we hope to have all the Law Faculties in Nigeria converge on Umuahia, brainstorm and present papers; then make discourses and at the end of the day, come up with solutions that will help the government and other stakeholders in Nigeria to make the federation of Nigeria prosper and work well,” he added.
Apart from publishing the Conference Proceedings, the President further said that the Association which also sponsors the Nigerian Law Journal endeavours to publish the journal at the end of every conference.
Membership of the 61 year-old NALT which was formed in 1962, The Oracle Today gathered, transcends Faculties of Law of Nigerian Universities and also includes lawyer staff of agencies of government purely dedicated to Law like Nigerian Law School, Nigerian Institute of Legal Studies, Nigerian Institute of Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) and the Nigeria Law Reform Commission.
Prof. Ngwakwe who promised the Conferees a good outing in God’s Own State, said the confab would be spiced with Longs Service Awards to worthy members.
