Passengers stranded, as railway workers begin three-day warning strike over salary increment
Rail passengers across the country are now stranded following the surprise industrial action embarked upon by workers of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) over demands for salary increase, and other welfare issues, Thursday.
The workers under the labor group, Nigerian Union of Railway Workers (NURW) shut down operations across the country, Thursday.
The Union workers, who are demanding salary increment and better welfare packages are currently protesting at the Mobolaji Johnson Train Station in Ebutte-Meta, Lagos.
The three-day warning strike which was declared by the Union will hold from Thursday, November 18 to Saturday, November 20, 2021.
Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi had invited the labour unions to a meeting on Friday but ended in a deadlock. Another follow-up meeting between the Board and Management of the NRC could not change the decision of the unions on the planned strike action.
General Secretary of the Nigerian Union of Railway Workers, Segun Esan, had earlier told journalists that the mobilisations for the warning strike had been massive, adding that there was no going back.
The protesting workers at the Ebutte-Meta station carried placards, singing solidarity songs, and ensured that services were halted
It was gathered that the workers also turned back passengers who had come to the station with the hope of boarding a train to their various destinations.
