Police arrest suspected cultists, recover arms, ammunition in Lagos, as IGP orders security reinforcements to S/East
Police in Lagos have arrested three suspected cult members in the Ikorodu area of the state, in addition to recovering two pistols and ammunition from them.
This is also as the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Usman Alkali Baba, has ordered security beef up in facilities and personnel to attack prone regions of the country, including the South East
Police spokesman, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrest in a statement he issued in Lagos on Friday.
He identified the arrested suspects as Oluwaseun Michael, 31, Adedotun Jelili 25, and Solomon Moses, 22.
“Acting upon intelligence report, operatives of the CP Special Squad stormed some cultists’ den in Isawo, Ikorodu on April 16.
“The timely raid led to the arrest of some suspected cultists and the recovery of two locally-made single barrel pistols, four live cartridges, several assorted charms, berets and an award plaque.
“The suspects have provided useful information to the police.
“The Lagos State Police Command uses this medium to call on parents, guardians, traditional, religious, political and youth leaders to prevail on the youth to shun cultism and other vices,’’ he stated.
Hundeyin assured that the suspects would be charged in court at the completion of investigation.
Meanwhile, following the spate of violent attacks on police formations and commands across the country, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, has ordered the immediate deployment of additional operational assets to complement officers and men attached to Operation Restore Peace in the South East, and other launched operations, with the aim of flushing out criminal elements who hide under the guise of aggrieved citizens to perpetrate criminal acts.
A statement by the Force Public Relations Officer CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Thursday, said the IGP had ‘strongly condemned the recent spate of attacks on Police officers, facilities, and other police operational assets around the nation, particularly in the South East where there have been attacks on police stations, ruthless murder of police officers in their line of duty to protect the citizenry, as well as the destruction of critical national infrastructures.’
“The IGP warned that attacks on police officers in the line of duty would no longer be tolerated under whatever guise, as the Force holds the lives of its personnel sacrosanct, and such unwarranted attacks would be strictly treated in accordance with extant laws.
“He equally reiterated the commitment of the Force to protection of lives and property while stressing that it is vital to respect the lives and fundamental rights of Police officers and other security operatives, in order to enable them advance their sacred mandate of serving and protecting the citizens better,” Adejobi said.
