Police discover 20 dead bodies inside building in Benin City
Edo Police Command says it has discovered 20 dead bodies of both adults and children inside a building suspected to be a ritualists’ den in Benin City, the state capital.
The bodies found inside the building in Benin City, were discovered during a raid by operatives of the state police command, Wednesday.
According to the state police command spokesperson, Jennifer Iwegbu, operatives raided the complex while acting on intelligence following reports that it was a ‘suspected ritual shrine,’ she said.
“Fifteen mummified male corpses, three mummified female corpses and two mummified children corpses were discovered at the scene just three miles (5km) from the city centre,” said Iwegbu.
Many Benin residents who thronged the building expressed horror over what seemed to have been an operation hidden away from the eyes of even nearby neighbours.
It is not immediately clear how long the bodies had been in the building and the suspects were being interrogated, the police said.
“All three were young men, and a police medical team was part of the investigations.
“An intensive effort is ongoing to arrest the other fleeing suspects,” Iwegbu said.
