A police Sergeant who sustained head injuries during a clash between police and motorcyclists in Ebonyi state has died.
About six other officers who sustained various degrees of injuries are still hospitalized.
Governor Umahi who made the disclosure Monday during the state security council meeting held at the state executive council chambers of the Government House in Abakaliki, said the policemen were injured by stones hauled on them by the motorcyclists who protested the killing of their colleague.
The Sergeant, Onyebuchi Nweke, attached to the anti-robbery squad of Ebonyi police Command last week Wednesday night reportedly killed a motorcyclist, Ejike Ofim, along the Water Works road, over N50 bribe.
The killing of the motorcyclist led to a protest that degenerated into a clash with the police despite the arrest and dismissal of the rogue officer.
The policeman has since been tried and summarily dismissed from the force and would be arraigned in court for murder at the end of investigations according to the Command.
Umahi regretted the death of the police officer, though he did not identify the name of the deceased officer.
“One of them sustained a serious injury on his head and was rushed to Enugu where he was operated upon but unfortunately he died,” Umahi said.
He commended the police Commissioner, CP Titus Lamorde, for handling the matter in a professional manner.
The Governor promised to assist in the burial of the late Police officer.
