Police scuttle Obi-Datti rally in Ebonyi, fire teargas at supporters (+video)
Despite the successful staging of the popular One-Million-Man-March in several states across the country, the police command in Ebonyi has scuttled Saturday’s planned rally by supporters of the Labour Party (LP) Presidential candidate in the 2023 General Elections, Dr Peter Obi and his running mate, Dr Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed.
Police operatives reportedly stormed the rally ground in Abakaliki opening fire at the supporter while also shooting tear gas canisters at the distraught participants.
A rally participant on ground, Ahmed Abdullahi, posting via his Twitter handle (@AhmedAbdulla09), wrote: “Nigeria is indeed a fourth-world country. Who shoots at a peaceful rally? This APC government has succeeded in running this country aground with their politics of calumny. Peter Obi is really giving them sleepless nights.”
The supporters who had converged on the Pastoral Centre, Abakaliki, the take-off point were reportedly attacked by police acting on an instruction from unconfirmed sources, dispersed the gathering, as supporters were seen scampering to safety.
Meanwhile, an unconfirmed source had claimed that the Ebonyi State Government reportedly charged Peter Obi’s Supporters, known as Obidients, the sum of N4 million for the permit to stage the One-Million-Man-March, Saturday.
According to the coordinator of the event, the state government requested N4 million if they are going to make use of Pa Ngele Oruta Township Stadium.
“The Governor of Ebonyi State, Dave UMAHI, is demanding that ObIdients must pay 4million naira to make use of Abakaliki Township Stadium as takeoff point, for the Ebonyi Mega March in Solidarity for Mr Peter Obi slated for Saturday Sept 17th, 2022. #Our mumu done do in Ebonyi State. ”
