Presidency tackles Shehu Sani over Igboho, as Benin Republic extends detention of activist by 6 months
Presidency, Monday, tackled former senator representing Kaduna Central at the National Assembly, Shehu Sani over the latter’s questioning of the decision by authorities in the Benin Republic to extend the detention period of leader of pro-secession group, the Yoruba Nation, Sunday ‘Igboho’ Adeyemo, by six months.
It would be recalled that Yomi Aliyu, who is counsel for the detained activist, had confirmed the extended incarceration of his client.
However, President Muhammadu Buhari’s Personal Assistant on New Media, Bashir Ahmad, Monday, tackled Senator Sani over the latter’s comments questioning the rationale behind decision by the Benin Government in extending Igboho’s detention by six months.
Reacting to the extension via his verified Twitter handle (@ShehuSani), the senator said: “I don’t support Igboho’s separatist ideas and activities in anyway, but the reported extension of his detention by six months is inhuman and condemnable.”
Replying to Sani’s tweet, via his verifies Twitter handle (@BashirAhmaad), Ahmad urged the senator to proceed to Cotonou, the Benin Republic capital, and protest if the decision of the Beninoise government does not sit well with him.
“Go to Cotonou, mobilize and take the streets Distinguished Senator, that will make your call to be heard clearly by them,” Ahmad told Senator Sani.
Igboho has been in detention in Benin Republic since he was arrested at an airport in Cotonou by the neighbouring country’s security forces while trying to flee to Germany in July 2020.
He fled Nigeria for Benin Republic after the Nigerian Government through the Department of State Security (DSS) declared him wanted for terrorism and arms possession charges, which he has denied.
This is, also as a court in Oyo state had dismissed those charges against him, and awarding him millions of naira in costs against the DSS.
