Presidential/NASS elections: ‘Turnout is unbelievable,’ Okonjo-Iweala hails Nigerian electorate
Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has hailed the Nigeria electorate over their turnout at Saturday’s Presidential and National Assembly election in the country, describing the turnout as ‘unbelievable.’
The WTO chief who was in the country to participate in the voting having registered in the country, hailed voters for the turnout, despite her initial apprehension over the level of a performance exhibited by electoral staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the area.
Okonjo-Iweala cast her vote at the polling unit in Umuda Isingwu village, Umuahia, Abia State, Saturday, where she registered.
According to Okonjo-Iweala, the turnout is the largest she has ever seen all the years she has been voting in her community.
In a series of tweets via her verified Twitter handle (@NOIweala), the former Controlling Minister for Finance and the Economy during the Goodluck Jonathan administration, as well as being the country’s Minister of Foreign Affairs in the President Olusegun Obasanjo tenure, initially thumbed down conduct of the INEC officials after hours of delays in showing up at the polling units.
Okonjo-Iweala had arrived her polling unit in company of her husband, Saturday morning, as early as 7am.
“The INEC officers finally arrived. My husband and I have just voted.
“The turnout is unbelievable, the largest I have ever seen in all the years I have voted in the village. Young and very old all are here,” she wrote.
