PSG face Mbappe exit, as Real Madrid table ‘insufficient’ £137m bid
French giants, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) may have to reluctantly accept an offer of £137m officially tabled for France international, Kylian Mbappe with less than a week to the end of the Summer transfer window.
Mbappe has not hidden his preference go join the Spanish outfit and is seen to be holding out on a new contract at PSG in order to force a move to the La Liga giants in Spain.
PSG however face the reality of the fact that Mbappe will become a free agent by the end the next transfer, in January when he can sign a pre-contract agreement with another club with the French club getting nothing from their investment unless they can, in a last ditch move, convince the want-away player to commit to a contract extension.
Mbappe is free to negotiate his own contract in barely four months’ time, a situation PSG do not want but which they face if Mbappe is not tied to a new contract by then.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid has officially tabled a £137m offer to PSG for Mbappe even as they believe they can secure the player for free in the next four months.
However, PSG have rejected the Madrid offer, insisting they will only accept an offer that suits their own conditions.
PSG Sporting Director, Leonardo while confirming that Mbappe wants to leave the club, insists he has vowed not to leave on a free transfer.
‘Kylian Mbappé wants to leave, that seems clear… If he wants to leave, we will not stop him, but on our terms,’ he told reporters.
“We said NO to Madrid’s first offer, but if our conditions are met, we’ll see.”
PSG are willing to cash in on their goal machine, but only if their £180m valuation is met.
“Real Madrid official offer is very far from what we want for Kyilian. Yes, it’s around €160m. It’s less than what we paid for him in 2017”
“We have no plans to talk to Real again for Mbappé. The deadline is August 31 at midnight.
“This is how the transfer window is: we keep him and we extend. But we’re not going to let him go for less than what we paid when we still owe Monaco money.”
PSG have also made offers of their own to Mbappe, though the Frenchman recently rejected PSG’s offer of a new bumper deal.
Leonardo said: “We made two important offers to Mbappé: one for the top players in the squad two months ago and one above these players very recently.
“We want to prove to him that he is an important player, at the centre of the project, but not above the project.”
Earlier, Wednesday, PSG rejected an offer from Real Madrid for Mbappé, the French club’s Sporting Director Leonardo said the offer was “not sufficient”.
Spanish and French media had reported on Tuesday that Real Madrid had made a €160m (£137m) bid for the 22-year-old World Cup winner who scored 42 goals in all competitions for PSG last season and has reportedly said he wants to move to Spain.
Leonardo said that PSG, who have just signed the Argentina forward Lionel Messi from Barcelona, did not plan to discuss the Mbappé matter again with Real Madrid and that if Mbappé wanted to leave he would have to do so on PSG’s terms.
“Kylian Mbappé feels like leaving, this seems clear to me … Our goal is to extend and keep him. If a player wants to leave it must be under our terms. This applies not just to Kylian but to all players.”
Leonardo would not confirm the figure of €160m but said the bid was “around that”. “We consider the offer as being very far from what Kylian is worth today,” he added.
Mbappé joined PSG from AS Monaco in 2017, on loan initially and then permanently a year later in a deal valued at €180m.
