Senate finally confirms Prof Adam as INEC National Commissioner
Senate has confirmed President Muhammadu Buhari ‘s North East nominee, Prof. Sani Adam as a National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
It would be recalled that while the senate had rejected Ms Lauretta Onochie’s nomination, it had merely stepped down that of Prof Adam following a pending legal suit he was involed in at the Supreme Court filed by his former employers at the University of Jos.
However, Prof. Adam was eventually confirmed, Thursday, after consideration of the report of the Senate Committee on INEC, which was presented by the Chairman of the Committee, Senator Kabiru Gaya (Kano South).
Gaya, in his report, said: “After a thorough investigation into the petition against the nominee (Adam), the Committee found out that the petition against him was paltry and that the reason for the termination (not dismissal as alleged by the petitioner) was not based on gross misconduct but on rationalisation policy of the Federal Government.
“The court judgment was based on whether or not his appointment should have been terminated and this has nothing to do with his integrity or moral uprightness.”
Senate had earlier, Tuesday, confirmed the appointment of five National Commissioners for INEC, including; Prof. Muhammad Sani Kallah (Katsina); Prof. Kunle Ajayi ( Ekiti); and Saidu Ahmad (Jigawa), Baba Bila (North East) and Abdullahi Zuru (North- West).
The senate rejected Onochie’s confirmation of the grounds of Federal Character Principle.
