Sound Sultan: Family confirms death of artiste from throat cancer

Top Nigerian singer, songwriter, social rights campaigner and activist Olanrewaju Abdul-Ganiu Fasasi, popularly known as Sound Sultan has died of throat cancer, as confirmed by his family, Sunday.

He died aged 44.

The late music producer and sit-com star who was diagnosed with Angioimmunoblastic T-Cell Lymphoma had been undergoing chemotherapy in a hospital in the United States.

Sound Sultan plays a lead character in the sit-com, ‘Papa Benji’ comedy series, created by comedian Basketmouth (Bright Okpocha) where he plays the ‘Professor.’

Sound Sultan’s death was confirmed by his family on Sunday in a statement.

“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of multitalented veteran singer, rapper, songwriter Olanrewaju Fasasi aka Sound sultan. He passed away at the age of 44 following a hard-fought battle with Angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma.

“He is survived by his wife, three children and his siblings. We, his family will appreciate the utmost privacy as we come to grips with the tragic loss.”

Angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AITL) is a rare form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, which is a group of related malignancies (cancers) that affect the lymphatic system (lymphomas) or the throat area.

Sound Sultan hails from a family of recording artistes including, Baba Dee, his younger sibling.

He has been married to Chichi Morah, now Farida Fasasi, his wife since 2009 and they have three children
