From Aniekan Aniekan, Calabar
Public and private medical facilities across Cross River State may ground to a halt over the recent kidnap of a neurology professor in the state.
Professor Ekanem Philip Ephraim was reportedly abducted on Thursday from her resident by unknown gunmen in Calabar.
Dr Felix Archibong, Chairman of NMA, Cross River branch said the kidnapped doctor worked with the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, (UCTH)
Giving more insight into the abduction, Archibong revealed that the kidnappers disguised themselves as patients and as she gave them audience, they brought out weapons and whisked her away.
“We are sure that they are kidnappers because they have reached out to the family demanding ransom.
“Although, the matter had been reported to the police, we want the good people of Cross River, especially the state governor to help us by ensuring that our abducted member is rescued and returned to her loved ones unconditionally,” he said.
The state branch of the NMA has a standing policy of withdrawing it’s services whenever a medical doctor is kidnapped.
This is sequel to a resolution made by the association after an emergency general meeting held at the General Hospital Calabar on the 5thbof January, 2018.
The release which was signed by it’s then chairman, Dr. Effiong Mkpanam state’s that “for the avoidance of doubt, the Nigerian Medical Association will withdraw clinical services without any notice anytime a doctor is taken captive in the future.
“We cannot continue to save the lives of others while ours is not secured”, the release stated in part.
Meanwhile, DSP Irene Ugbo, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Cross River Command confirmed the incident.
She noted that men of the force are on the trail of the kidnappers to know where the kidnapped victim was taken to.
