The police confirmed that the incident occurred on Tuesday adding further that it has now apprehended the suspected killer, a male undergraduate of the same institution, identified as a 400-level student, Demain Okoligwe, of the Department of Petrochemical Engineering.
A statement released by the spokesperson of the Rivers Police Command, Wednesday, quoted the suspect was paraded before newsmen, Wednesday afternoon.
“Parading the suspect before newsmen today October 26, the state Commissioner of Police, CP Nwonyi Emeka, said on Wednesday, October 25, at about 3.30 pm, operatives of Ozuoba Division received a complaint from a good Samaritan and neighbor, name withheld, of Road 20, back of NTA Ozuoba that he went to his house where one Demain Okoligwe ‘m’ a fellow tenant resides and perceived a very bad odour and immediately rushed to the police station, where the DPO led detectives to the scene.
“The police boss said the fleeing suspect and boyfriend of the deceased, Demain Okoligwe ‘m’ 24yrs old, a petrochemical engineering 400 level student of UNIPORT was arrested.
“CP Emeka said the lifeless and butchered body of Justina Otuene, 20, a biochemistry 300-level student at Uniport, was recovered and deposited at the mortuary.
“He mentioned that a preliminary investigation is in progress and that the case has been transferred to SCID for discreet investigation. He condoled with the family of the deceased victim and urged young ladies to be cautious and careful about any person they involve themselves in any form of relationship.
“On arrival, the door was forcefully opened, and a Ghana must-go bag containing a lifeless body was recovered back to the station.”
The police report, however, varies from widespread accounts which claimed that the decomposing and dismembered body of Justina was discovered in a sack after the suspect Demian had contracted waste disposal labourers (aboki) to dispose of the remains of the murdered student.
The labourer then reportedly contacted the Estate Vigilante on the discovery and Demian was subsequently arrested.
Other eyewitness account also claim that Demian after killing his girlfriend and taken out some of her part had travelled to an unknown destination leaving her dismembered body inside a bag in his apartment only to return to be arrested.
