Suspected cultists have assassinated four policemen at a checkpoint in Calabar, the Cross Rivers State capital.
The incident occurred at about 1 am, Thursday, at Anyan Mbad, off Idundu Road, in Calabar Municipality.
It was gathered that the cultists ambushed the men at the checkpoint and gunned them down before carting away their guns.
The check point was originally a military checkpoint before it was taken over by officers of the Nigeria Police.
Residents of the sleepy community said they heard heavy gunshots at the midnight and they stayed indoors for fear of their lives.
Early in the morning, they came to the check point and saw the lifeless bodies of the four dead policemen.
It was gathered that two inspectors and two sergeants were killed by the gunmen.
Responding to the development, the State Police Commissioner, Sikiru Akande said the aim of the gunmen was to dampen the morale of the police ‘but they have failed.’
He said the police have swung into action and 5 persons have been arrested alongside scores of arms and ammunition.
“This was a means devised by people to dampen our spirit in our efforts to secure the state.
“We have arrested 5 persons and are still arresting more.
“They gunmen are suspected cultists that are working hard to get equipment for their initiation coming up very soon.
“We have started recovering some of the weapons and the threat of them using the weapons against the public is greatly reduced.
“We are resolute and are going to strike back, virtually all the rifles have been recovered”, the Commissioner said.
