The many troubles of Obi Cubana; from fraud allegation to probable manslaughter
It has been one month of many troubles for businessman, Chief Obinna Iyiegbu, popularly known as Obi Cubana, as barely has he wriggled free from the clutches of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) than his business outlet is forced to shut down with looming charges bordering on murder, manslaughter, or criminal negligence facing him.
Obi Cubana made waves last September when he gathered the who-is-who to his Oba, Anambra state hometown for the burial ceremonies of his late mother in July, this year.
Some of the dignitaries who turned up for the occasion like the embattled police chief, Abba Kyari are still under career threatening investigation.
Penultimate week, the EFCC announced it had detained the businessman after an invitation to answer to charges bothering on tax fraud and money laundering.
Obi Cubana was guest of the anti-graft agency upon invitation to appear for questioning. However, the businessman was detained after hours of interrogation over the alleged offences.
He had arrived at the headquarters of the commission at Jabi in Abuja, according to sources and spent the whole of penultimate Monday in the agency’s custody over the allegations.
Spokesman of the Commission, Wilson Uwujaren, said he was yet to be briefed on the development.
Obi Cubana later regained his freedom after nearly two days in custody but only after he had deposited his international travel passport with the EFCC.
Only last Saturday, another tragedy befell the businessman, as one his range of nightclubs was forced to close down following the death of a customer at the facility.
The nightclub known as Hustle and Bustle and located in Abuja suffered an accident when a female guest was accidentally electrocuted while inside.
The guest later identified as Ms Susan Oleghe, was the CEO of Korporate_Legz, selling online an assortment of footwear, from sandals to designer shoes to men and women, who could afford her prices.
According to a report, Susan was leaving the club when she tripped on a metal rod. While another report claimed that she touched a metal door, as glimpsed from a replay of the club’s CCTV. Either way, the unexpected happened. She was electrocuted.
“They were about to leave the club and she tripped by a floor that doesn’t look well laid. She fell on a metal rod. The metal rod has high voltage wires for lightning or whatever in it. And it was covered with metal for aesthetics,” a family source told reporters.
It took the club many hours to announce the tragedy shutdown, without stating reasons for the closure.
“We are closed till further notice. This is due to the loss of our esteemed client.
“We are deeply saddened by this situation and need time to heal from it. Our prayers are with the families of the lost soul. May her soul Rest In Peace.
“We sympathise with the family on this unbearable loss.
“Kindly bear with us as we pass through this storm,” the club announced on its Instagram account afterwards.
It is understood that the late Susan Oleghe family are planning to drag the club and its owners to court, obviously to claim damages for criminal negligence.
This is also it is believed that the nightclub and its owner may be facing charges of murder or manslaughter over the death of the guest.
