Tinubu, Reps hail D’Tigress for winning 2023 Afrobasket Championship
Commendations have continued to rail, Saturday’s clinching of the 2023 Afrobasket Championship by the country’s female national basketball team, D’Tigress, in Kigali, Rwanda, as President Bola Tinubu, House of Representatives hailed the effort of the Nigerian girls.
It would be recalled that the D’Tigress defeated Senegal’s female national team by 84-74 to win the 2023 Afrobasket Championship in Kigali, Rwanda for a fourth consecutive continental title.
D’Tigress dominated the game and never gave Senegal any chance to dream, recording scorecards of 19-10, 24-21, 26-19 and 22-17 in the four quarters of the game.
History was also made as the Head Coach of D’ Tigress, Rena Wakama, was the first indigenous female coach to lead a national team to win the Afrobasket championship trophy.
At the post-match conference, Wakama praised the team for the doggedness, hard work and passion to achieve such feat in the short time they were put together.
“I’m very proud of my players. They deserve the accolades. Indeed this is a great achievement that should be rewarded.
“We did not have enough time to train together, yet they brought in their professionalism and were marvelous in winning the trophy,” Wakama said.
Reacting to the victory, Saturday, President, Bola Tinubu congratulated the female national basketball team for winning their fourth consecutive Afrobasket championship.
“I congratulate our very own D’Tigress @DtigressNG for a well deserved fourth consecutive AfroBasket Women Championship.
“We are proud of you,” Bola Ahmed Tinubu wrote via his Twitter handle (@officialABAT), Saturday.
Also, the House of Representatives has congratulated and noted with delight the outstanding performance of Nigeria’s female basketball team, D’Tigress who emerged winners of the just concluded 2023 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket Championship.
The House says the historic fourth consecutive win is a testament to the virtues of consistency, diligence, and teamwork, which they have eminently demonstrated in stamping their dominance of the game on the continent.
In a statement jointly signed by House Spokesman / Chairman Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Hon. Akin Rotimi Jr. and Chairman, House Committee on Sports, Hon. Ekene Adams Abubakar, they praised the incredible display of talent and the signature Nigerian ‘Can Do’ spirit was a delight to watch for all Nigerians and fans of the game across the world.
“They have brought honour and pride to Nigerians, and we owe them our deepest gratitude.We congratulate the entire team for this feat, including Amy Okonkwo, who finished as the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. We also celebrate the head coach, Rena Wakama, who made history as the first female to lead a team to win the Afrobasket tournament, as well as the entire management and technical team. This development is a testament to the position of the 10th assembly of the House of Representatives, that our women and girls can thrive in every area of human endeavor if they are given the enabling environment and requisite encouragement.
