Tinubu’s victory lacks credibility – Cardinal Onaiyekan
Archbishop Emeritus, Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, has discredited the February 25 Presidential election which produced the candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, as President-elect.
This is also as the Catholic Archbishop denied asking Nigerians to accept the result of the poll as announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) last Wednesday, insisting that he does not wish to be ‘drafted into boosting a non-existing credibility of results.’
The disputed polls’ outcome has seen the main opposition political parties already file their separate suits before the Presidential Election Tribunal (PET) in Abuja, last Friday, even as international election observer groups, as well as governments maintain similar stand on the questionable process and conduct of the polls by the INEC.
INEC, has since, last Wednesday, declared Tinubu as winner of the elections and President-elect, despite still uploading results from a over one-third of polling units used for the Saturday, February 25 exercise.
According INEC, Tinubu polled 8,794,726 votes to defeat Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democatic Party (PDP) who came second 6,984,520 votes, while Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) followed in third with a total of 6,101,533 votes.
Reacting through a statement signed by his Personal Secretary, Emmanuel Adugba, Friday, Cardinal Onaiyekan claimed that the elections produced what he described as ‘tragically questionable results.’
“After a tragically questionable election, His Eminence blatantly refuses to be drafted into boosting a non-existing credibility of results and its consequent legitimacy of the declared winner.
“His Eminence is a firm lover of peace, but Never at the expense of TRUTH, AND JUSTICE. God bless Nigeria,” read the statement.
