West Africa’s deepwater champion, Total, is working to return peak oil production at operated Akpo field in oil mining lease (OML) 130 deep offshore Niger Delta.

The DeepwaterAkpo field which came online some 10 years ago in 2009 saw intervention to recover condensate production numbers by control slanting oil-water ratio to cut water production and restoring output to nameplate 175, 000 barrels per day.

However, the field with some 620 million barrels of reserves has been in production since 2009 and it would be difficult to restore production to nameplate capacity due to natural declines but the operator recorded impressive success arresting water and gas production and returned output to over 120, 000 barrels a day.

According to company sources, production encountered high gas and water production, prompting the operator to deploy well intervention services to cut water production to 30 percent and boost condensate production.
