Most Rev. Fr. Ugorji becomes new Archbishop of Owerri Diocese

Catholic Bishop of Umuahia Diocese, Most Rev. Fr. (Dr.) Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, has been named the new Catholic Archbishop of Owerri Diocese.
The Papal Nuncio to Nigeria (Representative of the Pope in Nigeria), Archbishop Antonio Filipazzi, announced the new appointment of Most Rev. Lucius Ugorji as the Archbishop of Owerri at the opening ceremony of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria today, Sunday, March 6, 2022.
With the appointment, Ugorji replaces Archbishop Anthony l. Obinna who has been in that position since March 26, 1994.
“The Holy Father has accepted the resignation of His Grace, Most Rev. Dr. Anthony Obinna as the Archbishop of Owerri.
“In his place, Most Rev. Dr. Lucius Ugorji has been appointed the Archbishop of Owerri.
“Archbishop Ugorji will remain the Apostolic Administrator of Ahiara Diocese,” the Apostolic Nuncio said.
The week-long Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria holding at the Catholic Secretariat, Abuja, is the first for this year.
Most Rev. Ugorji who is the Vice President of Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, was born on January 13, 1952.
He was ordained as a Reverend Father on April 16, 1977 and was appointed Bishop of Umuahia on April 2, 1990. He was ordained Bishop on July 1, same year.
Most Rev. Ugorji was made the Apostolic Administrator of Ahiara Catholic Diocese following the eruption of succession crisis that engulfed that Diocese, a position he combined with his responsibilities as Bishop of Umuahia Diocese.
