UN condemns ‘deeply shocking’ killing of 29 fishermen by Boko Haram in Borno border town

United Nations has condemned reported ambush and brutal killing of more than 30 civilians in Mukdolo village in Ngala Local Government Area of Borno State by Boko Haram insurgents.

The incident which occurred Thursday, was described as ‘deeply shocking attack,’ by the UN I a statement issued through its Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mr. Matthias Schmale, who also extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wish the injured who are recuperating a speedy recovery.

Several persons were also reportedly injured, and others are still missing following the deadly attack allegedly carried out by an armed group, yet to be identified.
According to reports, the victims of this heinous attack were fishermen and farmers eking out a livelihood in an environment that is very insecure. These individuals included both internally displaced persons (IDPs) and host community members from the neighbouring Dikwa Local Government Area.
The village of Mukdolo had been abandoned prior to the attack due to the activities of non-state armed groups.
Further reacting to the sad development, the UN stated the deeply shocking attack is another horrific reminder of the real threats of violence and insecurity that IDPs and other people affected by more than 13 years of the non-international armed conflict in the region continue to face daily in their struggle to survive.
UN reminded all parties to the conflict to adhere to their obligations under international humanitarian and human rights law to protect civilians from harm, just as it called on State authorities to speedily investigate this crime and swiftly bring the perpetrators to justice.
It would be recalled that about 29 fishermen in Mukdolo village along Dikwa-Ngala Road were killed suspected Boko Haram terrorists while fishing in the Lake Chad region.
Mukdolo village is in Gamboru-Ngala Local Government Area of Borno State, a Nigeria-Cameroon border town along the fringes of Lake Chad.
Sources in Ngala confirmed that the fishermen were killed while on fishing and wood-cutting activities on Wednesday evening by terrorists riding on motorcycles.
According to the sources, the terrorists started shooting sporadically killing 29 while seven others barely escaped with degrees of injuries.
“The terrorists asked the victims to lie down. Thereafter, they used their fishing net and wrapped the victims before they started torturing them. After they became unconscious, they opened fire on them and killed all 29 of them.
