*Group creating meaningful impact through a variety of initiatives
It was a beehive of activities at Weatbaker , last weekend, as a group of women who play in the energy gathered at a most Iconic hotel located in the serenity of Ikoyi area of Lagos.
These galaxy of stars , or if you like ,star-studded women operating under the aegis of Women In Energy Network (WIEN) assembled in the place to unwind, exchange banters, take selfies and all of that . It was a roundup of the year 2023 with an Awards Night and End of Year celebration.
The celebration was very necessary because ,after the hustling and bustling of the year ,they needed time to unwind ,dance ,clap and reward those who made significant contributions during the year to encourage them to do more and spur others into action for the group.
The group emerged in 2020 to provide a platform for women that work across the energy industry value chain; to network and build confidence and links to progress their careers or businesses. Specifically, it is to address the issue of representation of women in leadership positions across the energy industry to drive performance and delivery ,enhance the quality of decision-making through a diverse and holistic approach to ideas generation and among others advocate for policies and regulations in the energy industry to attract and exploit the potential of women in value creation. The group seeks an environment where the female folks will join their male counterparts to build and transform the Nigerian energy sector into the beacon of pride in particular and the nation’s economy in general.
As part of efforts to further encourage girl children to study STEM the group is actively promoting the interest of the girl child in STEM, an approach to learning and development that integrates the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
To this effect it has flagged up Bille Supernova Girl Scholarship programme and Science Fair initiative to mobilize, inspire and guide the girl children to take special interest in courses of study that will prepare them for great roles in the rapidly changing world.
Supernova Girl initiative targets early grooming of girls in primary schools, junior and senior secondary schools into taking careers in science and technology related disciplines. The fair is conceived to provide grand inspiration programme for girl children with keen interests in studying mathematics and science subjects. Aside from the Supernova Girl project, the group is engaged in other mentorship programme to nurture the next generation of female leaders in the energy industry.
In her address, the highly elated President of the group , Mrs Eyono Fatai-Williams, identified some of the milestones the group has achieved since it came into existence. Among them is WIEN Mentorship Programme, which she described as a critical project dedicated to nurturing the next generation of female leaders in the industry.
She noted that by fostering meaningful connections and providing guidance, WIEN, has paved the way for success and create a supportive network that transcends boundaries.
She said, the award night was not just a celebration of success but a recognition of the resilience, dedication, and innovation displayed by women who have left indelible marks in the energy sector.
According to her, it is also a reflection of the group’s commitment to fostering a more inclusive and diverse energy landscape as has never been stronger, and tonight’s awards ceremony stands as a testament to the incredible talent and excellence within the network.
