WIEN: Our goal is to position Nigeria’s energy industry for optimal performance
Position the women folks fully in the energy sector to contribute maximally to the economic growth and development of Nigeria are our goal, according to the Women In Energy Network (WIEN), an association of well-articulated profession women who play in the energy and are determined to impact the nation’s energy industry value chain.
It added that its emergence four years ago is already beginning to reshape the Nigeria’s energy sector for greater optimization, given the number of laudable achievements it has recorded within the short period it has exited.
The Executive Secretary of the association , Mrs Asanimo Omezi , who stated in Lagos on Friday , when she led a delegation of the group on a courtesy visit to of Eko Electricity Distribution Company Plc( EKEDC), said that WIEN emerged to make significant impact in the nation’s energy sector.
She told the Chief Executive Officer of EKEDC, Mrs Rekhiat Momoh that WIEN emerged in 2020 with a vision to be the leading network that promotes the participation and advancement of women in leadership across the energy value chain in support of national development.
Omezi,who said that she represented the President of the group Mrs. Eyono Fatai-Williams who was unavoidably absent , told the host that WIEN is an association established in 2020 to provide a platform for Women who work across the Energy Industry value chain; to network and build confidence and links to progress their careers or businesses.
She said the mission of the group is to facilitate greater success through gender diversity, equity, and inclusion, adding that with the combined professional experience and global network of our founding members enables the group to advocate for change and educate advance women and entrepreneurs at various levels in the energy supply chain.
A WIEN woman uplifts other women, helps drive organizational performance, accelerates profitability, and is committed to the advancement of the energy sector for national development.
The advocacy point views of WIEN include addressing representation of women in leadership positions across the energy industry to drive performance and delivery, enhance the quality of decision-making through a diverse and holistic approach to ideas generation, advocating for policies and regulations in the energy industry to attract and exploit the potential of women in value creation and leveraging the nature and nurture capabilities of women in domestication.
It also seeks transfer of skills and capabilities across the various sectors in the energy industry just it provides the platform for women across entrepreneurial, corporate, and government entities.
Creating a platform for women to network and develop their core skills and capabilities.
The WIEN Executive Secretary noted that the association actively promotes the interest of the girl child in STEM, offers coaching and mentoring opportunities for women in the industry, functioning as the advocacy voice supporting women’s participation and engagement in various sectors of the energy industry while ensuring that women have the requisite capabilities to support entrepreneurial ventures.
Among the notable achievements of the group is the Bille Supernova Girl Scholarship programme and Science Fair initiative to mobilize, which was flagged off in 2022 ,to inspire and guide the girl children to take special interest in courses of study that will prepare them for great roles in the rapidly changing world. Supernova girl is a WIEN Initiative to encourage and motivate young girls to study STEM related subjects and aspire to work in the energy industry.
It is part of efforts to further encourage girl children to study STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).
She told the host that the reason for the visit was membership drive and intimate EKEDC of the existence of WIEN and some of its achievements as well as solicits supports for the group’s activities.
In her response, Mrs Momoh, expressed delight for the visit ,noting that she was glad when learned there is group that champions the interest of women in the energy sector for the overall growth and development of the Nigeria’s economy.
She said the EKEDC will support the group by encouraging female members of staff of the organization to subscribe to membership of the female advocacy group.
