18 contestants from across the country have converged on Calabar, the Cross River State capital, for this year’s Miss Earth Nigeria.
Some of the states which will be represented in this year’s event include; Cross River, Benue, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Anambra and will compete for the title at the Dome, in Calabar Municipality later this month.
As part of the activities scheduled for the event, the contestants will plant trees, clean up markets and sensitize the people on the benefits of preserving the environment.
Speaking at the Ernest Etim Bassey Press Centre, the National Director of Miss Earth Nigeria Ibinabo Fiberesima said the event has been on for the past 20 years.
She said Miss Earth Nigeria is about recycling wastes and preserving the environment because it is what we do to the environment that the environment does back to us.
She said: “Running Miss Earth is lifting voices for our environment. These young girls speak for mother earth and we need to think how to manage our environment by avoiding wastages in all ramifications.”
“In the last twenty years, I have singlehandedly organized this pageant and the result is that I have seen young girls planting trees and turning wastes to wealth.
“It has been wonderful because all that we do is to change the narratives when it comes to protecting the earth,” she said.
According to her, she has been involved in organizing Miss Earth pageant for twenty years and has been able to watch young girls helping to protect the environment by either planting trees in communities or ensuring that wastes are recycled to produce.
The winner of this event will represent Nigeria later in the Philippines during the global contest.
The Miss Earth Nigeria is an international event and aims at channeling the entertainment industry as an effective tool to promoting environmental awareness.
It also aims at finding a lasting solution to the dangers posed by wrong environmental practices.
