5 die in Ogun, Anambra road accidents, as FRSC warns motorists against excessive speeding
Total of five persons died in two separate road accidents which occurred in Ogun and Anambra states, last weekend.
This is also as the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has warned to motorists to avoid excessive speeding on the road.
Three persons were killed while 10 others sustained injuries in a lone accident involving a Mazda bus at Onipepeye area on the Abeokuta-Sagamu Expressway on Sunday.
FRSC Sector Commander in Ogun, Mr Ahmed Umar, who confirmed the accident to newsmen in Abeokuta, the state capital, blamed the accident on excessive speeding as the driver of the bus, marked APP 297 YC, lost control at a bend and somersaulted.
He added that 15 persons were involved in the accident comprising of four men, nine women, a boy and a girl, saying that 10 people were injured while two men and a woman died.
Umar said the injured were taken State Hospital, Ijaiye, Abeokuta, while the deceased were deposited at the morgue of same hospital.
The sector commander commiserated with the families of the crash victims and advised motorists to avoid excessive speeding.
Meanwhile, in another accident, the FRSC confirmed that two people died in a road accident on Sunday when a commercial Toyota Hiace bus rammed into a stationary truck beside the Police CID Annex on Onitsha-Awka Expressway.
This incident is contained in a statement issued on Sunday by the spokesperson of the Anambra Command of the FRSC, Mrs Margaret Onabe.
According to the statement, the accident, which involved a truck with number plate FKJ 22 and a Toyota Hiace bus with number plate GDD 68 ZP, occurred at about 8:45 p.m.
“Probable causes of the crash were road obstruction and excessive speed.
“According to an eyewitness report, the truck developed fault and was abandoned by the truck driver after placing caution signs at the front and rear of the vehicle.
“The bus driver who was on speed rammed into the truck from the rear and crashed,“ the FRSC statement said.
According to the FRSC, while 12 people, comprising eight men and four women were involved in the crash, two were killed and five others sustained varying degree of injuries.
Onabe said that first responders from FRSC Nteje Unit evacuated the injured to a hospital and deposited the dead in New Word Mortuary in the town.
The statement said that the Anambra Sector Commander of the FRSC, Commander Adeoye Irelewuyi, has commiserated with the families of the deceased and wished the injured ones quick recovery.
It said that the command had warned motorists to desist from speeding and to keep to the recommend speed limits.
