Community policing is solution to Nigeria’s security challenges – Expert

A retired Assistant Commissioner of Police Paddy Ogon says community policing is the solution to Nigeria’s security challenges.
Ogon stated this in Calabar during 6th Annual Security Executive Converge organised by the Institute of Security And Strategic Studies.
The retired police ACP who was one of the resource persons during the converge said the present situation does not create room for effective policing of the country.
He maintained that states and local government areas should be empowered to create their policing units because they understand the terrain of their areas and are best placed to secure their Communities.
The converge had as theme “Addressing Nigeria’s Security Challenges: A Panacea for Socioeconomic Development, with about 30 Delegates from several the private and public sector.
The communiqué was endorsed by six persons including Prof. Azeez Olaniyan (Board Sec, ISSS).
They also noted in the communiqué that government should ensure Training and capacity building of personnel, developing a seamless communication network amongst agencies and fairness in recruitment process.
Others are use of technology for operations, creation of functional joint command centre in the office of the NSA as well as instituting performance evaluation mechanism.
Some of the objectives of this year’s converge included identifying security challenges bedevilling Nigeria today and proffering solutions and make recommendations to the Federal Government on resolutions met by the converge on addressing security challenges for socio-economic development of the nation.
As part of this year’s converge, several papers were presented by intellectuals and security experts from selected institutions across the country.
In addition, the speaker of the state House of Assembly, Elvert Ayambem presented a keynote address during the converge.
