Equities investors lose N279bn as bearish trend persists at NGX
Nigeria’s equities market closed negative on Tuesday, as the NGX-ASI decreased to 97,390.01 from 97,881.75 recorded at the close of the previous trading day; indicating a YTD return of +30.25%.
Market capitalization also decreased by N278 billion to N55.296 trillion from N55.574 trillion recorded at the close of the previous trading day. The market turnover increased to N13.916 billion from N11.771 billion.
At the end of today’s trading session, a total of 599,246,035 shares in 11,237 deals, corresponding to a market value of NGN 13,916,167,908.23, were traded. Compared with the previous NGX trading day (Monday, August 12), today’s data shows 20% improvement in volume, 18% improvement in turnover, and 6% improvement in deals. The current market capitalization of the Nigerian Stock Exchange is NGN 55.3 trillion.
In the aggregate, 120 NGX listed equities participated in trading, ending with 26 gainers and 29 losers. MeCure Industries led the gainers with 9.98% share price appreciation closing at NGN 9.37 per share, followed by Neimeth International Pharma (+9.9%), Champion Breweries (+9.75%) and University Press (+9.63%).
On the losing side, Oando came out last with an end-of-day price depreciation of 9.97% at NGN 40.20 per share, followed by Livestock Feeds (-8.1%), Cornerstone Insurance Company (-7.66%) and Linkage Assurance (-7.61%). Guaranty Trust Holding recorded the highest volume of 72 million traded shares, followed by Japaul Gold and Ventures (69.6m), Access Holdings (66.3m) and Veritas Kapital Assurance (60.8m).
Regarding the performance of NGX market indices, the benchmark NGX All-Share Index (ASI) dropped 490.93 (-0.5%) points to close at 97,390.01, representing a 1-week gain of 0.48%, a 4-week loss of 2.68%, but an overall year-to-date gain of 30.25%.
Other remarkable indices that performed were the NGX Top 30 Index (-0.28%; +0.85% 1WK; +29.21% YTD), NGX Consumer Goods Index (+0.82%; +2.76% 1WK; +39.7% YTD), NGX Oil & Gas Index (-0.13%; +4.36% 1WK; +55.67% YTD), NGX Main Board Index (-0.48%; -0.83% 1WK; +35.04% YTD), NGX Premium Index (-0.55%; +2.74% 1WK; +27.92% YTD), and NGX Pension Index (-0.56%; +3.12% 1WK; +16.28% YTD).
