Equity investors gain N270.31bn as NGXASI appreciates by 0.48%
Nigeria’s equities market closed positive on Friday as the NGX-ASI increased to 98,592.12 from 98,116.27 recorded at the close of the previous trading day; indicating a YTD return of +31.85%.
The market performance for the week increased by 0.87% to 98,592.12 from 97,745.73 recorded at the beginning of the week.
Market capitalization also increased by N270.31 billion to N55.978 trillion from N55.707 trillion recorded at the close of the previous trading day. The market turnover also decreased to N8.168 billion from N15.126 billion.
At the end of the last weekday of trading, a total of 477,443,740 shares in 9,529 deals, corresponding to a market value of NGN 8,168,013,692.43, were traded. Compared with the previous NGX trading day (Thursday, August 8), today’s data shows 21% decline in volume, 41% decline in turnover, but 5% improvement in deals. The current market capitalization of the Nigerian Stock Exchange is NGN 56 trillion.
In the aggregate, 117 NGX listed equities participated in trading, ending with 38 gainers and 19 losers. Julius Berger Nigeria led the gainers with 10% share price appreciation closing at NGN 110.00 per share, followed by Eterna (+10%), United Capital (+10%) and Associated Bus Company (+10%). On the losing side, Union Dicon Salt came out last with an end-of-day price depreciation of 9.88% at NGN 7.30 per share, followed by University Press (-8.79%), Custodian & Allied (-8.59%) and Omatek Ventures (-7.14%). Veritas Kapital Assurance recorded the highest volume of 103 million traded shares, followed by Oando (52.4m), United Bank for Africa (42.8m) and Zenith Bank (32m).
Regarding the performance of NGX market indices, the benchmark NGX All-Share Index (ASI) climbed 475.85 (0.48%) points to close at 98,592.12, representing a 1-week gain of 0.87%, a 4-week loss of 1.08%, but an overall year-to-date gain of 31.85%. Other remarkable indices that performed were the NGX Top 30 Index (+0.58%; +0.79% 1WK; +30.52% YTD), NGX Banking Index (+1.93%; +5.14% 1WK; -4.45% YTD), NGX Pension Index (+1.31%; +3.48% 1WK; +16.81% YTD), NGX Premium Index (+0.73%; +2.53% 1WK; +28.7% YTD), NGX Oil & Gas Index (+0.71%; +0.97% 1WK; +50.89% YTD), and NGX Consumer Goods Index (+0.67%; +2.35% 1WK; +37.19% YTD).
