Falconets lose to hosts, Ghana in WAFU B Women’s Cup final
Nigeria’s Falconets have failed to win the coveted West African Football Union (WAFU) Zone B U20 Women’s Cup as they lost the final match to host country, Ghana 3-1 via penalty shootouts.
The match had ended 1-1 apiece after normal regulation and extra time, and then went into penalties.
The Falconets managed to convert only one spot kick, as the Ghanaians clinched the trophy after converting two of theirs.
The one goal conceded during normal regulation time was also the first for the Falconets who had navigated the tournament to the final match without conceding a single goal, losing or drawing any match.
The match played Saturday night, at the Baba Yara Stadium, Kumasi, 7pm Nigerian time, was, however, anti climax to the scintillating performance of the Falconets all through the tournament.
The Falconets’ form has seen them beat all the Group B opponents en route the final.
The Nigerian girls had defeated Benin Republic 3-0 in the semi finals of the competition, last Wednesday, to reach the final with goals from Amina Bello (one) and a brace by Esther Onyenezide.
The Falconets reached the finals of the women’s tournament without conceding a goal, as against the Ghanaian team’s ‘goalkeeper who has already shipped in two goals in the course of the championship.

The Falconets beat Niger Republic 7-0, Togo 6-0, Burkina Faso 3-0 to reach the semi finals, and Benin Republic epublic by 3-0 to reach the finals, scoring a total of 19 goals, none conceded.
Winners and finalists qualify for the Women’s African Nations Cup (WAFCON) tournament, next year.
